hypoactive sexual desire disorder
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder is the leading sexual complaint of women and is characterized by diminished or a complete absence of libido. There is little or no interest in initiating sex, absence of feelings of sexual interest or desire, absence of sexual thoughts or fantasies, lack of sexual response and little or no desire to seek stimulation.
This diagnosis also includes sexual aversion disorder, which is an aversion to, avoidance or dismissal of sexual prompts or sexual contact. It may be acquired following sexual or physical abuse or trauma.
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder is also a common side effect of medications used to treat patients with depression, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This lessening of interest in life cycle and relationships goes beyond what is normally expected in the aging process.
Low desire becomes more common with aging and it is estimated that 10% of women
age 49 or younger have low desire, 22% of women age 50-65 have low desire and
47% of women age 66-74 report low desire.
