A Jilted Candidate Responds to the St. Pete Times

Thursday February 27, 2003

On Sunday, February 23, 2003, the leading newspaper in the Tampa Bay area endorsed one of my opponents for mayor of Tampa. To my delight, the St. Pete Times editorial contained all manner of positive comments about my own candidacy, which was, in itself, a bit of an endorsement, at least from my way of seeing things! Two of the most interesting aspects of the St. Pete Times editorial were 1) the one criticism the Times expressed about my candidacy; and 2) the issuance of an invitation to all the candidates to send in a 250 word response, if so inclined.

As you might expect, I was so inclined. Here is how I spent my 250 (no more, no less) words. Enjoy.

=========

I'm grateful for the invitation to respond. I think all candidates are up to the mayor's job -- voters can't go wrong, provided they want more of the same. However, for excitement, fun, style and new directions, I'm the best choice. Naturally, not everyone wants change -- let alone fun!

I appreciate your semi-endorsement! Really! You credit me as one who "speaks intelligently on a range of issues, including civil rights, ethics, economic development, urban planning and open government." That's high praise! However, the best "compliment" was your "criticism" of my "pro-fitness agenda" -- a "defining flaw!" I take pride in this "flaw!" Tampa needs a fitness-focused mayor (by "fit" I mean self-reliant, emotionally intelligent, effective at relationships, fun and much more.) Better the mayor focuses on fitness than potholes and lap dancers.

For citizens seeking a change, consider the following reasons to vote for Don Ardell: My wide-ranging experiences, character, education, relationship skills, expertise in planning and self-management (wellness) leadership, energy level, wisdom, panache and winning personality -- for starters! Who else can promote a well city that's fun, fit, free and functional? Vote for the candidate who's self-funded, 100% free of special interests -- whose loyalties are the broad public interest, not the power players. What will I do? I'll lead Tampa to national fame as a tolerant city and redirect resources to help Tampa become America's fittest city by 2005! I'll support low-income neighborhoods and assist disadvantaged people, promote community festivals on Bayshore and set the tone for citywide freedom and diversity celebrations. If I had eleven words, I would have added this: Be well and always look on the bright side of life.
