Urine leakage can be managed well with absorbent incontinence pads, special underwear and adult diapers, all of which are made in disposable (mens or womens) or reusable (mens or womens) types. They are all specifically designed to absorb and contain urine.
Many people with urinary incontinence use these products because they provide protection and prevent embarrassment from urine leakage. Others use absorbent pads because they have been dismissed by doctors and nurses rather than treated when seeking help for urinary incontinence.
Absorbent products can be a useful and rational way to manage incontinence. Absorbent products are used to "soak up" and contain urine leakage, to protect clothing, furniture, bedding, and to maintain self-esteem and comfort.
These products come in all types according to absorbency, from thin panty liners to sanitary pads to adult diapers or briefs to bed and furniture protection products like bed pads. The urine-holding capacity varies. Disposable incontinence products are typically more expensive than washable products.
The washable garments have a protective outer layer of plastic, rubber or synthetic material. They can be pulled on, side-snapped, or have a front opening. The reusable garments are typically less expensive.
Absorbent products are also helpful during treatment of urinary incontinence. Early dependency on absorbent pads may be a deterrent to continence, giving the wearer a sense of security and acceptance of the condition that removes the motivation to seek evaluation and treatment. In addition, improper use of absorbent products may contribute to skin breakdown and infection. To avoid these problems, frequent changes should be done to minimize your exposure to the wet garment.
Factors that should be considered when absorbent products are used include type and severity of urinay incontinence, patient preference, quality and cost of the product, availability of caregiver to remove the product, and skin integrity. Absorbent products are expensive, especially for the older person on a limited income. Many people make their own absorbent padsfrom tissue paper, towels, washcloths, etc.
