i am a male and would like to know if urinary catherization
i am a male and would like to know if urinary catherization is painful? i have seen an educational video produced for nurse's training, and the male being catherized in the video begins to express a high degree of pain from the very beginning. he is very vocal and his facial expressions reflect the degree of pain the procedure is causing him. the nurse tries to soothe and comfort him and she tells him 'i'm sorry, i know this hurts' at least 3 times. this causes me to wonder if nurses accurately inform patients the truth of just what they will experience during painful procedures? my last question is, if the patient refuses to be catherized because of fear and anxiety, and requests to be sedated before he will consent, what might be the nurse's response? is this something that the physician may agree to, assuming the catherization is medically necessary? thank you very much.

Answer
I think I answered this question previously. Male catheterization can be painful but a local anesthetic can be inserted in the urethra called 'lidocaine jelly.' This can decrease the amount of discomfort when the catheter is inserted.
