I am pee shy. I used a #14FR intermittant catheter the other day and it was awesome. What a huge relief that I can actually go on an extended trip and I have something to fall back on in the event I cannot void. My question is, what would be an appropriate ointment for use when inserting the cath? I only used water the other day (my first go with a cath) and after words it took a full day to get rid of the sore/burning when I urinated. I am so happy I tried this, you should pass it on to others with this condition!

Answer
I do not receommend that a person routinely use a catheter to drain the bladder UNLESS they have a medical condition that prevents voiding naturally. If you are having a problem urinating then you need to see a doctor to detemrine why you cannot void. Catheterization of the bladder can lead to infection and other serious problems so please speak with your doctor before you continue to do this. A water soluble lubricant like K-Y jelly should be applied to the catheter before insertion.
