Answer
To help you minimize your nighttime visits to the bathroom try following these simple measures: o Decrease your fluids in the evening by drinking the majority of fluids before 6 p.m. and shift your fluid intake from the evening to the morning and afternoon. o Eliminate all alcohol and foods and beverages containing caffeine from your evening meal. o Take a one to two hour afternoon nap with your legs elevated to the level of your heart using a stool or pillows. This will allow fluid that has pooled in your tissues to flow back through your blood to the kidneys. You will increase urine output during the day, thus decreasing output and need to void during the night. There are also many medications that can also help these symptoms. They include a skin patch called Oxytrol, and 5 pills called Detrol LA, Ditropan XL, Sanctura, Vesicare and Enablex. You may be interested in books that can be good resources. The first book is called Managing & Treating Urinary Incontinence. This is a nice review of evaluation, treatment and management of urinary incontinence. It has a chapter on treatments for persons with your symptoms. The second book is Overcoming Overactive Bladder which also has a great deal of information. You can obtain these books from the website or on Amazon.com by putting in these term “urinary incontinence” and overactive bladder.
